Happy birthday to my love!
A sea around my heart:
Part shelter, part enduring word,
Part mirror of my art.
You are the calm that drains my rage,
Bliss upon my shores,
Immensity immutable,
Rush that life restores.
To you I wish to be a welcome
Harbor for your ocean,
Destiny and origin,
Aim of your affection,
Yearning of your motion.
Birthday Poems
Happy birthday to my love
Candles are a gift of light
Candles are a gift of light,
A tiny sun, a bit of star.
No other dancer in the night
Dances with such sheer delight,
Little souls serene and bright,
Each a glimpse of what we are
Shining innocent and pure.
Eighteen Candles At My Birthday
Eighteenth birthday here at last
I’ve dreamt of this day in the past
now it’s here nothing has changed
just one year older, nothing special
No pile of presents to make me smile
It makes me want to run a mile
This day was meant to be remembered
But I want to forget it forever
Eighteen candles, pushed down the knife
didn’t wish for nothing, first time in my life
there’s nothing I want that would come true
eighteenth birthday, never thought I’d be so blue
My Birthday Cake
Why is birthday cake so good?
I love it oh so much!
It’s good to eat – but even more -
I think it’s nice to touch!
It’s squashy pink and sticky white
And stuffed with special goo.
With candy roses on the top -
One time my piece had two!
I like to blow the candles out.
I like to make the wish.
But more than all I like to lick
The frosting off the dish.
Now sundaes are quite wonderful.
Banana splits are fine.
But birthday cake is something else -
Especially if it’s mine!

My Birthday is in August
My birthday’s in August
It’s really a shame,
My party was small,
Hardly anyone came.
I wish I’d been born
In November or May,
Instead of a time
When my friends go away.
In August there just
Isn’t anyone there.
A summertime birthday
Is simply not fair.

Happy Birthday Mother
Happy birthday, Mother,
Even though you might prefer
Life without these markers,
Each too public to defer.
Now that you are fifty,
Sing to us your own sweet song,
That we might celebrate your life,
Rejoicing all night long.
Each of us has love to bring,
Each a special song to sing,
To lose your heart among.
Happy birthday dearest one
Happy birthday, dearest one,
Sweet child of my heart!
We’ve become one family,
Of which you are a part.
And so I sing out equally
To all of those who are
Mine by blood or fortune blessed,
No more, no less my star!
We are one in love and joy,
In fondness and in worth,
And so as one we celebrate
This day, your day of birth!
